Today I started my first official day of my graduate studies (and yes, things are starting on a Saturday. Go figure). In light of finally being able to turn the page to this new, exciting chapter in my life, I've decided to keep a (b)log.
This decision came about from a number of different angles. I'm hopeful that it will help me to feel connected to my people in North Carolina (especially my mother. Hi Mom.), that it will keep my writing skills and my wit sharp, and will act as a creative outlet in the interesting times ahead. I have no doubt that in the coming months in the Great White North, I'll have lots of stories to share. I'm already experiencing a bit of culture shock:
- What's a Wegman's? As someone who grew up in Arkansas (home of the Clinton family, the Duggar family, and the Walton family (that last one being responsible for Walmart)), it's going to take a bit of an adjustment to get used to another shopping center that starts with "W."
- Why don't people here do the courtesy wave? Jaywalking is like a national pass-time up here, and no one does the courtesy wave! I mean, it's not that big a deal, but it's not that hard, either. Just stick your hand up and move it back and forth when someone lets you cross in front of them or drive past them or whatever. Just a little acknowledgement. You could do it with two fingers. Or even just one, as long as it's not the bad one. Whatever.
- Honestly, the weather up here is gorgeous. Like, absolutely perfect. I know, I know, there's gonna be a snowpocalypse in like two months because of #LakeEffectLife. I know that I need a thick winter coat and snow boots (update: I have both!). I know what to expect (at least, I think I do. Maybe I'll be eating my words. We'll see). But right now it's great. It's like April 25th up in here: Not too hot, not too cold; all you need is a light jacket.
Regardless of all things different, I'm getting into the swing of things up here in the Great White North. It's certainly not NC or UNC, but I can still Hark the Sound from 600+ miles away, right? (Side note: I'm still rooting for the Heels in all things ACC. I've been asked several times.) For right now, things aren't too shabby. I've got a group project to go work on, and other adventures and quests to complete. With that, I'll update around this time next week!
End log.
